$400, $300, $200? 8.2 Million Families Qualify for 2025 Inflation Rebate

If you live in New York and filed a state income tax return, you may be among the 8.2 million households eligible to receive a rebate check worth up to $400 starting this fall.

The payment is part of Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2026 state budget, aimed at helping residents manage the rising cost of living.

Here’s everything you need to know to understand the program, who qualifies, and how much you can expect to receive.

What Is the 2025 Inflation Rebate?

The rebate is a one-time tax refund authorized by the New York State government to support working families during a period of high inflation.

Unlike traditional stimulus checks, this rebate is tied to your 2024 income tax return and is intended to return excess tax revenue back to qualifying households.

This means the funds are already accounted for—you just need to have filed your return correctly.

Who’s Eligible?

To receive the payment, you must meet these basic requirements:

If you meet these conditions, you do not need to apply separately.

The state will automatically process your rebate using your tax filing information.

Rebate Amounts by Income Level

The amount of your check will depend on your filing status and reported income:

  • $400 – Married couples filing jointly with income up to $150,000

  • $300 – Joint filers earning between $150,001 and $300,000

  • $200 – Single filers with income up to $75,000

  • $150 – Single filers earning between $75,001 and $150,000

These rebates are scaled to provide more assistance to lower- and middle-income households.

When Will You Receive Your Rebate?

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance will begin issuing checks between August and October 2025.

  • Payments will be sent by mail, not through direct deposit.

  • If you’ve moved recently, it’s important to update your mailing address with the state to avoid delays.

Do You Need to Apply?

No. As long as you filed your state tax return and meet the eligibility criteria, the rebate will be processed automatically.

There are no additional forms to complete or applications to submit.
