Americans are kicking off December 2025 with the lowest gas prices seen since 2021.
The national average for regular gasoline has dropped to about $3.02 per gallon, giving drivers a welcome break during one of the most expensive times of the year.
Across the country, prices vary. some states are seeing upper-$2 per gallon, while states with higher taxes or transportation costs are still in the mid-$3 range.
Still, for most households, cheaper gas means more room in the budget for gifts, travel, and heating costs as winter approaches.
Why Gas Prices Fell This December
A mix of economic and seasonal factors fueled the decline:
