9 Effective Ways To Reduce Medical Expenses

As the cost of everything continues to rise with inflation, it seems like medical expenses are rising the fastest. This has resulted in many people being burdened by medical bills that they struggle to pay. Fortunately, there are multiple ways to limit your out-of-pocket medical costs and get the most from your health care benefits. Here are nine of the most effective ways to reduce medical expenses.

1 - Choose the Right Health Care Plan

Many employers offer multiple health care plans to their employees and each of these health care plans have different coverage, deductibles, and premiums. If you or a family member has a chronic condition that requires regular care, a health plan with a higher premium that covers more medical costs may be the best choice. If you are young and relatively healthy, then you may be able to save money with a health plan that has a lower premium and a higher deductible. The health care plan that is right for you will depend on your individual circumstances.

2 - Choose Providers That Are In-Network

Another effective way to reduce medical expenses is to choose health care providers that are in your insurance network whenever possible. These in-network providers are under contract with the insurance company to provide specific services at a specific cost. Providers that are out-of-network will generally cost you more because they have not agreed to lower rates with the insurance company.

3 - Take Advantage of Free Routine Health Screenings

Many health care plans now offer free routine health screenings for enrollees because of the numerous benefits of having these health screenings performed. Routine health screenings can catch many medical problems in their initial stages while they are easier to treat or cure. Finding health issues early also keeps more people out of hospitals, reducing medical expenses for both the individual and the health insurance company. If your health plan offers free routine screenings, take advantage of them.

4 - Consider Urgent Care or Outpatient Facilities in Place of Hospital Care

Hospital care is often the most expensive type of health care, so you can save a considerable amount of money by only going to the hospital for care in dire emergencies and when there is no other viable option. Many common medical procedures can be done at outpatient facilities that cost less than hospitals. Most minor emergencies, like dog bites, painful bladder infections, and wounds that need stitches, can be taken care of at urgent care centers for a fraction of the cost of the hospital emergency room.

5 - Pay Medical Expenses With an HSA or FSA

A Health Care Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) allows you to pay for medical expenses with pre-tax dollars from your paycheck. While they both are used to pay medical expenses, there are some differences between them. The money saved in a FSA must be used by the end of the calendar year and cannot be transferred between employers. A HSA is transferable and the money saved in it is owned by you and earns interest over time.

6 - Save Money With Free and Discounted Health Services

In addition to reducing the cost of going to the doctor or to the hospital, many health plans also provide free or discounted health services to their enrollees. These services may include nutrition services, gym memberships, and other services geared towards health and wellness. Some large employers also offer free and discounted wellness services to their employees. Take advantage of these offers to spend less while you improve your health.

7 - Switch Prescriptions to Generics

Many brand name prescription medications have a generic version that is just as effective and costs less. In most cases, you can save 30% or more on your prescriptions by switching to the generic version, which can reduce medical expenses by a considerable amount if you take multiple medications. Ask your physician if they can give you a prescription for the generic version or switch you to an equally effective medication that has a generic version.

8 - Choose Store Brand Over the Counter Medications

For medications that you buy over the counter, the store brand is the generic equivalent of the name brand. The store brand medications have the same active ingredients in the same quantities as the name brand, so they are just as effective while costing considerably less. If you have any questions, the pharmacist will be able to answer them and provide you with a recommendation on what to choose.

9 - Order Frequently Taken Medications in Bulk

Just like with groceries, you can get a discount on medications when you buy them in bulk. If there is a medication that you are taking daily or multiple times a day, you can save a lot of money by ordering a 90-day supply by mail instead of purchasing a 30-day supply at a pharmacy.
